You will probably have already read that BRM takes a holistic view of the business of rental.  That is to say it understands that a healthy rental business involves the smooth transition of your rental items round the following loop:

rent -> maintain -> repeat


This involves a feedback loop between the returned items, the mechanic's workflow, and then back again to the available items.  Furthermore if an item is out of service for any time we need to make sure that:
  1. we don't necessarily take bookings against that item.
  2. we are warned if we already have the item in existing reservations - which may need to be swapped out.
